UNT Dallas Campus deputy vice provost named executive director of Tarleton State University’s Central Texas System Center

DALLAS – UNT Dallas Campus Deputy Vice Provost Garry Ross has been named executive director for Tarleton State University’s Central Texas System Center in Killeen.  His tenure will begin at the site near Fort Hood Jan. 21.

The executive director serves as the chief administrative officer of the university system center. Ross will oversee all functions of the center, including academic programming, financial administration, student services and institutional advancement.

Prior to his three-year tenure at the UNT Dallas Campus, Ross served as executive director and dean of academic and student affairs for the Texas A&M University-Kingsville System Center in San Antonio, dean of the University College at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, and as a professor at Baylor University in Waco, Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La., and Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Ark.

Ross is a member of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s P-16 Advisory Council and has lobbied for developing a more rigid curriculum to prepare students for their experiences in higher education.

John Price, vice provost of the UNT Dallas Campus, said he accepted Ross’ resignation with “great regret.”

“While I am happy for Dr. Ross, I am saddened by his imminent departure from our campus, which has experienced many successes under his leadership.  Garry has been an excellent colleague and friend.  He will be missed dearly,” Price said.

Ross said his experiences at the UNT have been educationally rewarding. “I’ve learned a lot about the challenges associated with growing a university, but also how to overcome them. I owe a great debt of gratitude and appreciation to the faculty coordinators, without whom progress would have been slow. The faculty and staff are tremendous assets to the UNT Dallas Campus.”

Ross was named executive director after a nationwide search. The move puts him closer to his childhood home and farm outside of Waco.

The UNT Dallas Campus, which operates under the authority of the University of North Texas in Denton, currently offers junior-, senior- and graduate-level courses leading to bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Once freestanding, the University of North Texas at Dallas will begin recruiting its first freshman class for admission in fall 2009.
