Assistant Professor of Information Technology Afrin Naz hosted 48 international students for an information session on The University of North Texas at Dallas Dec. 19.
Gloria Bahamon, assistant deputy vice chancellor for college readiness and a native of Colombia, welcomed the international guests. Representatives from the offices of financial aid, recruiting and admissions provided information on Dallas Campus academic programs and ways to pay for an education. Representatives from UNT Denton campus also participated.
Naz, who coordinates the IT academic program, also spoke about her field. She said she organized the session to help answer questions that potential students commonly ask.
Dickie Hargrave, international recruitment manager for UNT Denton, explains the admissions process for international students at an international student information session at UNT Dallas Dec. 19.
“As a faculty member, when I advise prospective students and when I go into the local community to recruit I always have to answer questions about UNT Dallas programs, admissions processes and financial aid and scholarships,” Naz said. “As a Bangladeshi immigrant, when I talk to people in the local D/FW-Bangladeshi community I also have to answer additional questions about UNT’s international admissions. So I arranged this session by bringing together the Office of Student Services at the UNT Dallas and the Office of International Admissions in Denton to get answers for their questions.”
In the audience were distinguished members of the local Bangladeshi community including the president of the Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and the former president of the Bangladeshi Association of North Texas. The program director and Texas chapter representative of Distressed Children & Infants International, other local community leaders and Oak Cliff community school teachers also attended. They asked the school to host similar sessions in their communities.
Of the people who attended, seven decided to enroll in the school in spring 2009. Naz called the event “very successful.”
“As you know, international students are always very interested in computer science and information technology programs. Accordingly, I will continue to promote the UNT Dallas IT program among international students. In spring 2009, we will have two international students in our IT program.”
