Shouse steps down from faculty alliance post

DALLAS – May 15 was Doug Shouse’s last day to bang the gavel bringing to order the monthly faculty alliance meeting at the University of North Texas UNT Dallas. Shouse was elected the inaugural president of the faculty organization last August.

UNT UNT Dallas Deputy Vice Chancellor Peter Johnstone said Shouse had done a great job.

“I’ve certainly enjoyed working with Doug. He has been a great advocate for you, the faculty. He’s been a pleasure to work with as the faculty chair, and I think he’s done a great job in this role, particularly the inaugural role, which is not the easiest of ones to pick up on. I think he’s set the scene well for us as we move forward,” Johnstone said.

Shouse, who has lived on the Walnut Creek Country Club golf course in Mansfield since 1999 with his wife Judy, has been in public education for 40 years. He came out of retirement to help start the new university’s educational administration degree program as program coordinator four years ago. He will continue to teach at the school.

“I’ve never had as much fun as I’m having right now, and I’ve had a lot of fun in my 40 years in education,” Shouse said. “I had lots of fun at the public school level, but working with administrators, helping them grow and develop, this is what I wanted to do. I love helping teachers reach their goal.”

“During 35 years that I spent in public education, I opened a lot of new schools both in the Arlington and Carrolton/Farmers Branch school districts because I was in both of those districts during their prime growth periods. But to open a new university? How many people get an opportunity to be a part of that process?”
