UNT Dallas Campus tuition will not increase

DALLAS — Tuition at the University of North Texas Dallas Campus will not increase for the 2008-2009 academic year, after the UNT System Board of Regents approved the freeze in their quarterly meeting Feb. 7.

John Ellis Price, vice provost of the UNT Dallas Campus, said that avoiding the tuition increase was critical to the Dallas Campus’ growth and its future as a stand-alone university.  Under Texas state law, the UNT Dallas Campus will be eligible for free-standing status when student full-time equivalent enrollment exceeds 1,000. Reaching that milestone will also release additional state funding for further development of the campus and the opening of UNT Dallas—the only public university in the city limits.

“We are here to provide access to success and we want to eliminate every obstacle to education. That is why we are not seeking an increase,” Price said. “By not increasing tuition we will also be enhancing our chances of meeting our recruiting goals and opening the University of North Texas at Dallas.”

The cost of attending the Dallas Campus will remain unchanged. UNT in Denton will raise its tuition twice over the next two years, generating additional funding for student assistance, faculty retention and other projects. Students at UNT in Denton will pay $16.42 more per credit hour for 2008-2009 and $17.75 more per credit hour in 2009-2010.

Even with the increase, the cost of attending UNT in Denton will remain below the average cost of other peer institutions in Texas, such as the University of Texas and Texas A&M. UNT has the third largest undergraduate enrollment in the state.

The UNT flagship is also assessing an additional $1 fee for the Student Union in Denton, but officials rejected increases in other fees. Students at the UNT Dallas Campus do not yet pay many of the fees associated with a college campus, such as parking.
