Monthly Feature

UNT Press publishes lavish photographic guide to Texas Civil War artifacts

Texas Civil War Artifacts: A Photographic Guide to the Physical Culture of Texas Civil War Soldiers
Richard Mather Ahlstrom

This month we release Texas Civil War Artifacts by Richard Mather Ahlstrom, a massive compendium of more than 600 photographs--with descriptions--of equipment used by Texas soldiers in the Civil War. This is the first comprehensive guide of its kind. It describes and features photographs of the diverse use of the Lone Star on hat pins, waist-belt plates, buckles, horse equipment, side knives, buttons, and canteens; the weapons used such as the Tucker Sherrard and Colt pistols, shotguns, rifles, muskets, and swords; and the leather accouterments, uniforms and headgear. Also included is a gallery of Texas soldiers in photographs.  More details on Texas Civil War Artifacts: A Photographic Guide to the Physical Culture of Texas Civil War Soldiers

Last Known Position
James Mathews

Also released this month is the latest winner of our Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Short Fiction: Last Known Position by James Mathews. Most of the nine stories were written upon the author’s return from combat service in the Middle East with the D.C. Air National Guard. Military experiences and settings cause certain human elements and truisms to emerge more profoundly and dramatically. These stories portray desperate characters driven to make desperate choices. Always on the edge of a dark and unpleasant reality, Mathews’ characters survive by embracing fantasy, humor, violence, and sometimes redemption.  More details on Last Known Position
