This issue of UNT Research provides only a glimpse at the array of important research, scholarship and creative activities taking place at the University of North Texas. However, I hope it inspired you and left you believing that tomorrow will be better than today because of the work we do.
Research at UNT is conducted by talented faculty and extraordinarily bright students who are committed to the pursuit of understanding so that we may advance our global society. The depth and breadth of our work exemplifies our interest in improving all communities in many ways.
UNT is committed to growing its research agenda, and recently we have made tremendous strides. Our commitment to invest $25 million in collaborative research and additional faculty through research clusters will enhance our efforts in key areas in which already we are among the nation's best. And, our new multimillion-dollar contract with the U.S. Air Force is only one of the significant advances we've made in securing important funding for work that will make a difference.
To help expand the research conducted at UNT, I have put together a new structure of support within our Office of Research and Economic Development. This structure begins with a new development team — staff members who will work with our faculty to secure high-profile, significant government grants.
Our development team includes Dr. Denise Perry Simmons and Dr. Richard Nader, who bring previous experience directly from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. The team works to expand UNT's external funding while supporting new and junior faculty and promoting multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research teams, research affinity groups, and long-term proposal planning.
The development team will work in concert with our research services staff members, who also seek to support faculty in their pursuit of understanding.
UNT is committed to fulfilling its mission to educate tomorrow's leaders and to advance knowledge as we discover new ideas and create new possibilities. We are providing solutions for real-world issues.
