Students frequently prefer to seek guidance from a known and receptive faculty member when they have an academic or personal problem, want to share some good news or "just need to talk to someone." The Mentor Program provides an organized way for faculty and staff members to provide an extra dimension of caring for students who seek them out. Involvement in the program includes participating in a mentor orientation, posting a mentor sign near the office door, having this name listed in the mentor roster, listening to students and working with them in a professional and caring way, and keeping informed about UNT services in order to make appropriate referrals for help.
Mentors also obligate themselves to participate whenever possible in informational meetings and to keep updated the file of resource information that they are furnished.
The Mentor Program does not attempt to replace or substitute in any way for departmental academic advisers or the many other valuable services on campus. Instead, mentors help students become aware of the services and direct them to the appropriate areas for assistance.
Faculty members interested in participating in the Mentor Program should contact the New Student and Mentoring Programs Office.
This office assists faculty who wish to be involved in overseas study programs for UNT students. It also advises students on all types of study abroad programs and international exchange opportunities.
