Adjunct/Special_Appointments

An adjunct/special appointment is a temporary; semester-by-semester appointment employed to teach on-campus resident-credit courses. Only an adjunct/special appointment in allied health and vocational education may teach off-campus as well as on-campus resident-credit courses. This individual is not a student enrolled at UNT, and usually is employed less than full time. The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools requires that an individual teaching courses for credit must meet the same requirements for professional, experiential and scholarly preparation as his/her full-time counterpart teaching in the same discipline.

Teaching_Fellows_and_Teaching_Assistants

A teaching fellow is a graduate student who assumes total responsibility for the instruction in one or more classes.

A teaching assistant is a graduate student who assists a faculty member in a class or laboratory; however, he or she does not have total instructional responsibility for a class.

The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools requires that teaching fellows have credentials similar to those of regular faculty members or at least 18 graduate hours in the teaching discipline, be under direct supervision of a faculty member experienced in the teaching discipline, receive regular in-service training and be regularly evaluated. Under some conditions relative to training and supervision, TFs may be qualified so long as they have 18 graduate hours in the field. Minimum qualifications for teaching assistants are set locally.

Appointment of teaching fellows and teaching assistants is the responsibility of the chair of each department. In order to ensure quality teaching on all levels, the university has developed Guidelines for Recruitment, Selection , Orientation, Supervision and Evaluation of Teaching Fellows and Teaching Assistants; Guidelines for Use of Teaching Assistants in Large Classes and the International Teaching Assistant/Teaching Fellow Language Certification Program. In addition, schools/colleges and departments hold orientations in September, and all teaching fellows and teaching assistants are required to attend.  The following policies in the UNT Policy Manual, Vol. III provide specific information on teaching fellows and teaching assistants at UNT:  #15.1.27, #15.1.28, #15.1.30, #15.1.31.2.

Teaching_Load_of_Teaching_Fellows/Teaching_Assistants

All students holding teaching fellowships or teaching assistantships at the University of North Texas must be duly enrolled as graduate students each fall and spring semester in which they hold the fellowships or assistantships.

Teaching fellows and teaching assistants, either master's or doctoral, may register for graduate courses and be assigned to teach or assist in courses up to a combined total of 16 semester hours of credit. Combined loads in excess of 16 hours require special approval by the graduate dean and may not, under any circumstances, exceed 18 semester hours. Administrative heads of academic units making requests for overloads for teaching fellows or teaching assistants should be prepared to show that the students have demonstrated successful performance as teachers and as graduate students.

A teaching fellow or teaching assistant holding an appointment during a summer session must be enrolled in the summer session. The ratio of courses taken and those taught in a summer session is at the discretion of each academic unit.

All academic units should determine their requirements for taking and teaching courses up to the maximum set by the university and make these requirements known to their teaching fellows and teaching assistants.

Student_Assistantships

The awarding of departmental student assistantships is controlled by the chair of each department, subject to the regulations adopted by the appropriate dean. Faculty members needing student assistants should discuss appropriate procedures with the department chair.

Faculty members holding research grants providing funds for assistants should contact the university Human Resources Department and Sponsored Projects Administration to obtain both the necessary forms and help in locating applicants. The Financial Aid Office is responsible for placing work-study students.
