University of
North Texas

The libraries of the University of North Texas are housed in four buildings. The Willis Library houses the general collections including business, education, humanities, social sciences, maps, Texas and Federal documents, the Music Library and Audio Center, Rare Book and Texana Collections, and the University Archives. The Science and Technology Library is located in the Information Sciences Building. The Media Library is in Chilton Hall. The Library Annex contains the technical service operations and remote storage facility. Extensive information concerning the Libraries may be found at the Libraries Website: http://www.library.unt.edu .

Library_Hours

The University Libraries will provide a current schedule of hours for each of the libraries at the beginning of each semester. Appropriate announcements concerning holiday schedules will be posted at entrances a week before the holiday period. Hours for all libraries may also be found on the Libraries' Website.

Identification_and_Borrowing_Privileges

To borrow library materials a faculty member must be registered in the automated circulation system. All full-time faculty will be automatically registered within a month of their actual employment date. Individuals who need library privileges before the automatic registration or who are not full-time faculty must register with the General Circulation Desk in the Willis Library.
Faculty can check out materials using their UNT I.D. card. All I.D. cards are nontransferable. The following I.D. cards, if valid for the current semester, are honored at the UNT Libraries:

University of North Texas I.D. cards
Texas Woman's University I.D. cards
Texas A & M University at Commerce I.D. cards
North Central Texas College I.D. cards
UNT Health Science Center I.D. cards
TexShare cards
OCLC cards
UNT Libraries courtesy cards

Books are due at the end of the semester in which they are charged or when recalled for further circulation. Those faculty who do not return or renew their material when requested will lose their borrowing privileges. Faculty members not on a summer contract who wish to use the libraries during the summer terms must renew their records in the automated library system. This task can be done at the General Circulation Desk in the Willis Library. To avoid delay in summer authorization, faculty members should attempt to do this prior to the fourth class day of the first summer term.

Members of the faculty may borrow bound periodicals for 24 hours. Unbound issues may be borrowed for two hours only upon special request to the librarian of the appropriate collection. Non-circulating materials may be borrowed only upon special request to the librarian of the appropriate collection.

A faculty member may authorize an adult assistant to check out books or periodicals in his/her name by completing a faculty authorization form for each item to be checked out. This form must be presented by the authorized individual at the appropriate circulation desk. Faculty should not send their ID cards with the individual.

Spouses of faculty members are permitted to use the library according to normal library loan regulations. Applications for courtesy cards and registration in the automated library system are available at the General Circulation Desk at any time the Willis Library is open for regular library service.

Reserve_Books

The General Reserves area is located at the Reserve/Current Periodicals Reading Room in the Willis Library. This area services all reserve materials for those courses that fall within humanities and social sciences. Materials for all other courses are processed and serviced by the designated library location. The locations include the service areas in the following libraries: Music, Media, and Science and Technology.

Forms used in placing materials on reserve are provided at each of the areas mentioned. The form must be completed before it is submitted to the appropriate reserve area. In order to have the books on reserve by the beginning date, it is necessary for the libraries to have these requests one week in advance.

The libraries will photocopy single magazine articles, parts of books, etc., to be placed on reserve for particular courses if the request is in compliance with the copyright law. There is a fifty-page limit per article. Requests should be directed to the appropriate reserve desk. Seven days advance notice is requested to process this type of material since the photocopying and preparation can be rather time consuming.

Interlibrary_Loan

For research purposes, members of the faculty and graduate students may supplement UNT resources by borrowing from other libraries on interlibrary loan. Requests should be submitted to the Interlibrary Loan Office, Willis Library. In all loans the UNT library is bound by the conditions imposed by the lending library and endeavors to safeguard borrowed material.

Interlibrary loans must be arranged through the Interlibrary Loan Office. Loan arrangements made by individuals with other institutions must remain the responsibility of the individual; they may not be transferred to the Interlibrary Loan Office. Interlibrary loan requests may also be completed electronically on the Libraries' Website.

To facilitate interlibrary loans the libraries participate in a daily courier service among the Dallas/Fort Worth area universities and in an OCLC computer link-up with other colleges and universities in the state and nation.

Media_Library

Audiovisual materials are available through the Media Library, housed in Chilton Hall.

Equipment and facilities to use all formats held are available to individuals and groups in the Media Library, which has both specially equipped carrels and media projection classrooms. Media Library carrels and classrooms may be used for educational purposes only, including scholarship and research, and are not available for entertainment viewing of purchased or rented materials. Only Media Library materials (whether on reserve or part of the permanent collection) or non-commercial productions (such as student projects) may be viewed in the Media Library. Faculty may also schedule Media Library software for their classrooms or the Media Library classrooms.

Rental or borrowing of audiovisual materials from off-campus sources is arranged by contacting the Media Library staff. An absolute minimum of two weeks is necessary for rental or borrowing, and a fee is usually charged. A policy statement regarding the legal playback of off-air video recordings in the Media Library and in classrooms appears in Section V-C, General Policies in this Handbook. Assistance in the selection of appropriate media formats and equipment is available. Audiovisual materials may be borrowed only for use in UNT programs by faculty, teaching fellows or teaching assistants. Visit www.library.unt.edu/media for detailed information about Media Library services.

Request_to_Order_Library_Materials

The University Library Committee apportions library materials funds annually. Each department receives an allotment for the purchase of library materials. Requests to order books and periodicals are generally made through the departmental liaison. Additional information on ordering, new acquisition, and staff contacts may be found on the Libraries' Website.

All requests for media should be directed to the attention of the Media Library.

Photocopying_and_Other_Services

The libraries supply coin-operated and/or copy-card operated photocopying equipment on designated floors of the Willis Library and on the first floor and basement level of the Science and Technology Library. Copy-cards may be purchased in the Custom Photocopy Office on the lower level of the Willis Library.

All users of photocopy equipment are cautioned that indiscriminate photocopying of printed materials may bring them into conflict with the copyright laws. The libraries take no responsibility for any copyright infringements that may occur.

Faculty members also may have Custom Photocopy make copies of material. Contact the Photocopy Service, Willis Library, or the service desk in the Science and Technology Library. Patrons may make photocopies of microforms on equipment housed in the Periodicals/Microforms area on the lower level of the Willis Library. Custom photocopying, performed by the microforms staff can allow for copies up to 8 1/2" x 17" in size. Requests for this special service as well as the current price schedule may be made at the Periodicals/Microforms Service Desk.
