University of
North Texas

A center or an institute is an internal organization with a unique mission involving education, research, and/or service. The mission of such units must be consistent with that of the university. However, the organization may vary, with accountability resting with the academic office (e.g., chair, dean or Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs) under whose general direction the center or institute functions. Approval of new centers, including those to be included in external funding proposals, rests with the Council of Deans. (UNT Policy Manual, Vol. III, #16.8)   The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs keeps the University Committee of the Faculty Senate informed of such approvals. Centers and institutes are subject to sunset review (See UNT Policy Manual, Vol. III, #16.9).
