Campus Mail
Mail service employees pick up and deliver interdepartmental mail to all designated offices each morning and pick up any outgoing official State of Texas letters mailed from these offices. Interdepartmental mail must be 8 1/2" x 11 " or in an interdepartmental envelope provided by Mail Service. The central dispatch point is the Mail Room in the University Union.
Faculty members with office computers have electronic mail available to them upon request. The university also provides Internet access to faculty, staff, and students for a very competitive fee, and that access includes the availability of remote electronic mail.
Only official State of Texas business mail may be metered. Departmental offices maintain a set of instructions for use of the official mails, and details are available from the Mail Service located adjacent to the U.S. Postal Substation in the University Union. The Mail Room is open weekdays. Faculty members, however, should generally be aware of several regulations and procedures pertaining to metered mail.
1. Letters are to be sent/brought to the Mail Room unsealed, and all mail must carry a UNT return address including the post office box number, department name and account number.
2. Letter mail is presorted in the Mail Room and must arrive by noon to be posted the same day. Letter mail delivered to the Mail Room in the afternoon will be presorted the following day for posting.
3. Preparation of bulk mailings is the responsibility of the sender, or Mail Service will prepare it for a nominal fee. Senders should contact the Mail Service for instructions prior to printing and preparation.
4. Any special instruction"air mail," for examplemust be marked on the envelope or package, and certified mail must include the appropriate receipt and return receipt forms. All packages are automatically insured for $100. If additional insurance is required, the sender should so specify on the package. Express Mail must be in an envelope or package no smaller than 5" x 7" and the Express label must be completed by the sender.
5. When return envelopes are included in mailings, please call Mail Service for mailing procedures.
6. The Mail Service, in order to comply with U.S. Postal Service regulations effective February 2, 1992, requests that no staples be used to fasten folded mail pieces or to hold contents in place within a window envelope. Paper clips or staples on the inside of an envelope should be positioned away from the upper right quarter of an envelope because of the damage they may cause to the postal meter.
7. Each department is responsible for receiving and distributing incoming U.S. mail from its post office box.
For more detailed information concerning mailing procedures, please refer to the UNT Policy Manual, Vol. II, #6.1 or call the Mail Room.
Faculty members may rent postal boxes. On Saturday all mail is placed in boxes while only special deliveries and newspapers are placed on Sunday.
The university operates an Electronic Centrex telephone system (Centranet) that allows four-digit dialing within the academic, administrative and residence hall buildings on campus.
All telephones have direct inward dialing from outside the university. There are other 565 and 369 prefix numbers in the Denton community; however, they are not part of the university system. Various levels of service are available in the Centranet system that uses a Least-Cost Routing System with special long-distance services such as Metro, TEX-AN and WATS lines.
All academic and administrative telephones are for official university business only.
One may call the Telecommunications Office to receive a copy of the user guide or to report trouble with telephone service, or to obtain information on charges, levels and types of service available, installation, etc.
The university general information number, when calling from off-campus, is (940) 565-2000. When on-campus one may dial "O" for the campus operator and "9" then "O" for the general information (Denton) operator. The university emergency number for requesting police, fire department or ambulance services is "911" from any on-campus 565 or 369 telephone.
