The University of North Texas School of Library and Information Sciences (SLIS) created the Web Institute as a foundation for distance learning students beginning their masters degree study. Students meet at the Institute host site for four-day or nine-day Institutes and complete the remainder of the course online. The Institutes consist of classroom instruction, technology training, and social events. SLIS believes that these three elements provide the best opportunity for individual success in a distance education program. See the Schedule of Upcoming Institutes.

SLIS offers it’s three core courses (5000, 5200, and 5600) in a Web Institute format. These courses are required for all master’s programs of study. These courses can also be taken in a traditional classroom setting at locations on the UNT Denton and Dallas campuses. All students (except those in the School Librarianship Program of Study) must begin the master’s program with SLIS 5000. (see How many credits can I handle?)

No. If we have contacted you and added your name to one of our Institute email listservs, it means that your application is complete or very near complete and that you are intending to enroll in one of the next semester’s Institutes. Being added to the listserv means that we are holding a place for you in the Institute. Students who have been added to the listserv will have first priority when registering for classes. Other students will be allowed to register as space permits. Please see the Master’s Admission Checklist for an explanation of this process.

The listserv is a way for SLIS to keep incoming students informed about logistics and schedules for the Institutes. Any major changes to the information on the Web site will also be announced here.

Students who are currently enrolled have the opportunity to register during Early Registration. All new students will register during Regular Registration. See the Academic/Registration calendars on the Registrar’s Web site for registration schedules and fee payment deadlines for the semester you intend to enroll. Be sure to pay all fees before the fee payment deadline or your registration will be cancelled automatically.

All registration at UNT is done over the Web or the telephone. The easiest and most convenient method of registering is to use the WebReg system. By using WebReg, you can register for classes, view your schedule or tuition bill, and make fee payments. If you’ve never used WebReg before, you’ll want to follow the links to WebReg on the Registration page of your Web Institute Web site. These links will take you to a SLIS Web page that will help you collect all the various bits of information you will need to access WebReg.

SLIS 5000 is one credit and SLIS 5200 and SLIS 5600 are each 4 credits.

All students (except those in the School Librarianship Program of Study) must begin their master’s program with SLIS 5000. You can take 5000 with either or both of the other core courses (5200 or 5600). You can take other courses concurrently with the core courses with the approval of your advisor.

Part-time enrollment at the graduate level is considered to be 4-5 credits per semester. Full-time enrollment is at least 9 credits per semester. At the master’s level you should expect to spend 4 hours outside of class for every credit hour you take. For example, if you are taking 5000 and 5600, a total of 5 credit hours, you should expect to spend 20 hours per week on coursework.

The agenda for each class is posted on the Web Institute Web site. In general all classes meet from 8am to 5pm and, because these institutes provide the foundation for the remainder of the course which is delivered online, you are required to attend the entire time.
