SLIS offers it’s three core courses (5000, 5200, and 5600) in a Web Institute format. These courses are required for all master’s programs of study. These courses can also be taken in a traditional classroom setting at locations on the UNT Denton and Dallas campuses. All students must begin the master’s program with SLIS 5000. (see How many credits can I handle?) No. If we have contacted you and added your name to one of our Institute reservation list, it means that your application is complete or very near complete and that you are intending to enroll in one of the next semester’s Institutes. Being added to the list means that we are holding a place for you in the Institute. Students who have been added to the list will have first priority when registering for classes. Other students will be allowed to register as space permits. Please see the Master’s Admission Checklist for an explanation of this process. The list is a way for SLIS to keep incoming students informed about logistics and schedules for the Institutes. Any major changes to the information on the Web site will also be announced here. Students who are currently enrolled have the opportunity to register during Early Registration. New students will register during Regular Registration. See the Academic/Registration calendars on the Registrar’s Web site for registration schedules and fee payment deadlines for the semester you intend to enroll. Be sure to pay all fees before the fee payment deadline or your registration will be cancelled automatically. All registration at UNT is done via the Web, by accessing http://my.unt.edu and entering your EUID and password. You will register and manage your student accounts by accessing the website – http://my.unt.edu. MyUNT (my.unt.edu) is UNT’s online portal – a website that combines many of UNT’s online resources into one convenient location. Through the MyUNT website you can register for classes, pay your tuition, see your financial aid, check Eaglemail, and other student activities. The MyUNT portal requires that JavaScript be enabled in your web browser. You must use the following browsers: Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher or Netscape 7.1 or higher. As a new student you should take the time to go through the MyHelp for Students module accessed on the Internet at http://essc.unt.edu/eis/students.htm#. SLIS 5000 is one credit and SLIS 5200 and SLIS 5600 are each 4 credits. Students generally begin their master’s program with SLIS 5000. You can take 5000 with either or both of the other core courses (5200 or 5600). You can take other courses concurrently with the core courses with the approval of your advisor. Part-time enrollment at the graduate level is considered to be 4-5 credits per semester. Full-time enrollment is at least 9 credits per semester. At the master’s level you should expect to spend 4 hours outside of class for every credit hour you take. For example, if you are taking 5000 and 5600, a total of 5 credit hours, you should expect to spend 20 hours per week on coursework. A great deal of travel information has been collected for you on your Web Institute Web site. Check the Maps/Transportation, Hotels, and Restaurant pages. The agenda for each class is posted on the Web Institute Web site. All classes meet from 8am to 5pm and, because these institutes provide the foundation for the remainder of the course which is delivered online, you are required to attend the entire time. All SLIS students are required to be subscribed to the official school listserv SLIS-ANNOUNCE-L. This list is for announcements only, not discussion. It is through this listserv that you will be notified of any official school business including employment postings, conference notifications, and other related school business. To subscribe to this list, send an email to listserv@unt.edu <mailto:listserv@unt.edu>. Leave the subject line blank and put the following command in the body of the email: subscribe slis-announce-l yourfirstname yourlastname Example: subscribe slis-announce-l Melvil Dewey You can also communicate with the SLIS community through the SLIS Village, our virtual student union.
