SLIS 5200
Onsite Web Institute
Frequently Asked Questions
Q.
Must I attend the entire Web Institute?
A.
Yes. The course policy requires attendance for all hours of every class day. Your failure to attend or leaving early will result in being dropped from the
course.
Q. What should I bring to class?
Q.
May I bring drinks and snacks into class?
A.
Yes, you may bring beverages into the classroom, but we prefer that you not
bring food. Please clean up your desk area when you leave. No food or drinks are
allowed in computer labs.
Q.
May I leave class?
A.
Yes, you may take an unscheduled break if necessary. However, we do schedule
short breaks every hour to hour and a half, along with some activities that
allow you to move around and stretch.
Q. What will be handed
out?
A.
A packet of handouts to use in class and a CD containing Inmagic software to
download later at home. A readings packet will be made available for you to
copy: this will cost about
$25-$30 and arrangements will be made onsite.
The textbook will not
available onsite and should be purchased in advance.
Q.
Will there be work after class?
A.
Yes, but not much. You will be assigned some reading and other work to prepare
for the next day, but will have no written assignments to complete. We do have
evening social events, at which attendance is highly recommended but not
mandatory.
Q:
How much information and help will I get in the onsite vs. the online part of
the course?
A. As much as we can give you! During the onsite
Institute, we lay the groundwork for the rest of the semester—topics through
assignments—with plenty of opportunities for questions. We want you to leave
feeling informed and comfortable about the course. During the online component,
we are available via WebCT mail, weekly chats, and discussions (see our Online
Communication Guide) as well as the usual channels outside WebCT. We think
you'll find yourself communicating more with faculty, teaching assistants, and
classmates online than you ever did in the traditional classroom! You will get
to know your classmates face to face during the Institute and continue to
communicate with them online.
