Metadata & Z39.50
Metadata provides:
- descriptive information about a resource to facilitate location or discovery by users
Standardized for semantic interoperability: different local systems share same understanding of meanings and definitions of elements either by:
- describing resources in same metadata scheme (e.g., library catalogs)
- mapping their resources to a common scheme for search and retrieval
Z39.50 can use a commonly accepted metadata scheme for search and retrieval (e.g., Dublin Core)
