Grammar, Spelling, and Punctuation Test
All undergraduate students of the Mayborn School of Journalism must pass the Grammar, Spelling, and Punctuation (GSP) test to enroll in News Reporting and Writing (JOUR 2310) and other required coursework. Therefore, the Mayborn School of Journalism requires the GSP for both majors and minors.
Procedure for Taking the GSP Test
-
Download the GSP practice packet or stop by the Writing Lab (AUDB 105) to pick one up. Study the packet and complete the practice tests.
-
Attend either one private tutoring session or one GSP workshop. GSP workshops are held once a week (see Workshops). You do not have to sign up for them. Tutoring sessions are available during Writing Lab hours (see Hours). You may either make an appointment or walk in. Both workshops and tutoring sessions are free.
-
After the tutoring session or workshop, schedule a time to take the test. Go to the Writing Lab or call 940-565-2563 to schedule the appointment.
-
Before the test, pay a one-time fee of $35 at the Writing Lab. The Writing Lab accepts only exact cash or check.
-
You will receive your scores via email within one business day.
-
If you fail any section of the test, review your test with a tutor before re-taking the failed section(s). You may take the GSP up to three times, and you must answer 14 out of 20 questions correctly to pass a section.
-
After you have passed all three sections, the Writing Lab will contact the Mayborn School of Journalism. After the Mayborn School of Journalism receives confirmation, you will be unblocked from registering for journalism classes. You do not need registration codes.
-
If you fail after three (3) attempts, you must change your major (or minor)!
