Budget

The proposed budget is cost-efficient to provide the largest payback for the resources requested. The Principal Investigator has worked with the University and SLIS for matching contributions for funds for equipment and course release time to devote to the project (see Appendix B: Budget for details on these matching contributions).

The Principal Investigator has commitments from several organizations to contribute resources (e.g., data, software, hardware, staff resources, and other tools) for use with the project. Since a testbed is a collaborative effort, these commitments by SIRSI and OCLC reflect not only the value they see in this project but also the recognition of the need for cooperation and collaboration (see Appendix F: Letters of Support).

The request for funding from IMLS will be used in four key areas of project expenses:

· Course release and summer salary for Principal Investigator
· Tuition support for Research Associates
· Wages for Research Associates' work on project activities
· Travel.

All four categories of funding are essential for the successful completion of the project. It is important to highlight the need for travel support for this collaborative project. Project travel is focused on those trips necessary for 1) Research Associates' training on the contributed hardware and software, and 2) building of support and participation from stakeholders. Travel includes attendance by the Principal Investigator at meetings of the international Z39.50 Implementors Group (ZIG) to discuss the testbed, solicit participation, report on testbed activities and results, and gain broad community input throughout the project. Other travel requirements are for students to attend training sessions related to the reference implementation (at SIRSI headquarters in Huntsville, Alabama, and at the reference implementation site at the Texas State Library in Austin, Texas) and for creating the large test databases (at OCLC in Dublin, Ohio).
