<p>This is a 24-hour program equivalent to eight courses. Of those 24 hours, 18 hours (6 courses) are online coursework, and the remaining 6 hours (2 courses) are either student teaching or practicum. Students in this program may count a number of courses toward a M.Ed. in Teaching if they apply to and are accepted into that degree program.</p></why-earn-this><this-program-will-teach-you-label/><this-program-will-teach-you/><program-highlights-label/><program-highlights-1>UNT's College of Education is regionally and nationally recognized for excellence in preparing teachers, administrators, counselors, kinesiology and health promotion specialists, play therapists and other educators.</program-highlights-1><program-highlights-2>UNT is one of Texas’ top producers of students taking the state teaching certification exam.</program-highlights-2><program-highlights-3>Education degrees are ranked 30th for salaries by PayScale.com.</program-highlights-3><program-highlights-4>Our Professional Development School model places students in 200 schools within 30 school districts in North Texas for a full year of mentorship from a certified teacher.</program-highlights-4><program-highlights-5>The Department of Teacher Education and Administration graduates 900 certified elementary, middle school and secondary teachers each and the program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation.</program-highlights-5><program-highlights-6>The University of North Texas has been an innovator in preparing educators since being established in 1890 as a teacher’s college.</program-highlights-6><career-outlook-label/><career-outlook/><courses-label/><course-title-1>Assessing Language and Content Learning in EC–12 Bilingual and English as a Second Language Education (3 hrs)</course-title-1><course-description-1>Examination of issues related to assessment of language proficiency and cognitive abilities of EC–12 English language learners, including the importance of appropriate diagnostic testing to the teaching and learning process; a review of potential cultural bias in EC–12 assessment procedures for assessing eligibility of EC–12 students for special language programs.</course-description-1><course-title-2>Bilingual Content Instruction (3 hrs)</course-title-2><course-description-2>Study of curriculum, materials and pedagogy applicable to bilingual classrooms. Attention is given to the integrated teaching of mathematics and the social and natural sciences in bilingual classrooms, emphasizing research-based methods that use the learner’s first language for content instruction. Taught in Spanish.</course-description-2><course-title-3>Pedagogy of English as a Second Language for EC–12 Classrooms (3 hrs)</course-title-3><course-description-3>Examination of appropriate procedures and materials for academic content instruction and language development for English Language Learners (ELLs).</course-description-3><course-title-4>Everyone Can LearnApplying Theory to Teaching Practice (3 hrs)</course-title-4><course-description-4>Processes of learning and development related to teaching in diverse EC-12 school settings. Cognitive, social, physical and moral development research is presented, and practical examples applied to teaching practice are demonstrated.</course-description-4><course-title-5>Literacy Development for English Learners (3 hrs)</course-title-5><course-description-5>Detailed analysis of reading and writing instruction for English language learners.
