We are a large enough department that we can offer a wide variety of courses. In addition to the required courses, we offer electives on topics including health care economics, international trade, third-world development, money and banking, and many more.

We are small enough that our students receive individual attention from the faculty. Indeed, we consider our orientation towards students to be among our greatest assets.

Our faculty members are well-known experts who have written hundreds of articles and books on general topics and specific fields in economics. They also have worked on projects in Thailand, Poland, Egypt, Mexico, central Africa, and South Africa.Our faculty members provide individual attention so you develop a clear understanding of how to apply economic theory to real-world policy issues.Economics faculty members, Dr. Janice Hauge and Dr. Jeffrey Rous, winners of the 2022 Salute to Faculty Excellence Awards.Principles of Macroeconomics (3 hrs)Principles of economic organization and growth in modern, industrial society; money and banking, monetary and fiscal policy; determinants of national income and business fluctuations.Economics of Discrimination (3 hrs)Examines the differences in economic status by gender, race and ethnicity. Intergroup differentials in income, unemployment, wages, education and housing are addressed.Labor Economics (3 hrs)Unemployment, industrial injuries, industrial old age, ill health and substandard employment; remedial program evaluation.Economics of Natural Resources and Environment (3 hrs)Natural resource management and useproblems of renewable and non-renewable resources, including scarcity and market responses, role of property rights, externalities, benefit-cost analysis and energy policy with emphasis on Texas, analysis of environmental problems and policy formulation.The Economics of Sports (3 hrs)Examination of public policy questions about professional and college sports using economic models of sports industries. Topics include theory of the firm, the organization of sports and entertainment industries, sports labor markets, racial discrimination and pricing schemes specific to sports markets.Principles of Microeconomics (3 hrs)Business organization and market economy; theory of the firm; techniques of economic analysis in current economic problems; comparative economic systems.FSVKGbPpc3M
