The Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of North Texas offers course work leading to a Master of Arts degree in French. You'll master language skills through combining required coursework and other learning opportunities.The M.A. degree allows you to teach language courses at a community college, university or in public and private schools. Other options include teaching intensive language programs, working as a translator or interpreter, or in international studies. This program can prepare you for working with business professionals and multi-national corporations. You may also work in the tourism industry.

Why Earn a French Master's?

UNT provides a wide variety of services exclusively to graduate students. The Graduate Student Writing Support office can help you with writing, and the Toulouse Graduate School® offers several professional development workshops. Among the workshops is a Thesis Boot Camp. Many of the workshops are available online for your convenience.

The graduate faculty in the field of French specialize in applied linguistics; culture and civilization; Medieval literature; literature of the 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries; women's studies; Québec; and second language acquisition.

French Master's Highlights

The World Language Learning Center offers resources for learning nine different languages. It provides 80 computer workstations, more than 30 software programs for self-study and assignments, multi-language audio and video media, satellite reception of international foreign language programs, presentation equipment and additional materials.
We offer students the opportunity to study at the French Summer Institute to improve proficiency in French and increase their knowledge of French studies.
The institute helps individuals who can't enroll in a full-time graduate program for professional reasons earn an M.A. in French in three to five summers, depending on transfer credit or the minor field.
Graduate fellowships and assistantships are available. Language students may also find part-time employment in the World Language Learning Center or the department office, which requires secretarial skills.
Our faculty members' varied backgrounds include extensive research, travel and study in Europe, Canada and Africa, and involvement in professional organizations.

French Master's Courses You Could Take

New Technologies for Teaching French (3 hrs)
Current pedagogical frameworks combined with practical applications related to the use of the new technologies for teaching French.
History of the French Language (3 hrs)
Consideration of all aspects of the development of the French language with concentration on internal development (phonology, morphology and syntax) from Latin to Modern French.
History of French Civilization to 1789 (3 hrs)
History of French civilization from the origins to the Revolution of 1789, including political and social history, art, music, and literary movements. Lectures, readings, recordings, films and video sequences.
French Translation Theory and Practice (3 hrs)
Study of current theoretical frameworks, strategies and tools for translation combined with translation practice in a variety of contexts.
Exploring the Francophone World (3 hrs)
Analysis and exploration of language and other aspects of society in the francophone world, including former colonies of France and countries where French is used as a national, official, or vernacular language.
French Linguistics (3 hrs)
Advanced French grammar, morphology, phonology and syntax.
