UNT’s Higher Education program is one of the most established in the Southwest. We have graduated more than 1,000 doctoral and master’s alumni; many holding leadership positions in universities and colleges around the country as well as overseas.
The Master of Education in Higher Education is offered in three formats:
- The Standard Master’s Degree in Higher Education allows the student to specialize in one of three tracks: student affairs, community college leadership, or general administration.
- The Online option allows students to complete their degree fully online.
- The Master’s Cohort Program in college student personnel focuses on student affairs and includes immediate consideration for a graduate assistant position in student affairs or a related area.
- Use and critique theory for advocacy purposes
- Knowledge application and integration
- Design and evaluate effective educational interventions
- Leadership ability
- Design/use assessment results to inform for improvement
College of Education ranked 1st in the North Texas region among public graduate schools, 3rd among public graduate schools in Texas, 68th among public graduate schools and 89th overall in the nation by U.S. News & World ReportCollege of Education ranked 9th in Texas and 66th in the South by Best-Education-Schools.comA unique program feature is the Master's Cohort in College Student Personnel. Each academic year, a cohort of 12 to 15 students is selected to take courses on a full-time basis while working in a graduate assistantship in UNT's Division of Student Affairs. This cohort format, which lasts two years, is offered in addition to our standard master's program.Our faculty members have published more than two dozen books, monographs and book chapters and more than 100 refereed journal articles.The College of Education administers millions annually in expenditures for externally funded research, instruction, and outreach projects. These projects result from proposals submitted to external funding agencies and foundations by faculty, staff, and graduate students.The College of Education is regionally and nationally recognized for excellence in preparing teachers, administrators, counselors, kinesiology and health promotion specialists, play therapists and other educators.What Can You do With a Higher Education Master's?The master’s degree in higher education prepares students for entry-level and mid-management positions in higher education administration in areas such as student life, student housing, career centers, multicultural centers, student unions, advancement offices, alumni offices, academic advising centers, international student offices, financial aid offices, dean of student’s offices, institutional research offices, and business affairs offices. The student affairs track meets the requirements of the Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS) for graduate programs in student affairs.
Cultural Pluralism in Higher Education (3 hrs)Examines the role of cultural pluralism in U.S. higher education. Focuses on issues of race, ethnicity and gender, and their implications for the change processes of colleges and universities.Finance and Budgeting in Higher Education (3 hrs)Introduction to major elements of budgeting and finance in higher education. Designed to comprehensively address the budget process in colleges and universities, as well as the impact of budget activities on all areas of planning and operations within a higher education institution.History and Philosophy of Higher Education (3 hrs)Study of the development of higher education in the United States, including the forces that have shaped institutions and institutional culture and practice. Identification of the significant events and philosophies that have influenced the evolution of higher education institutions and analysis of the implications of these for practice and for the future of higher education.Organization and Administration of Higher Education (3 hrs)Examination of the theoretical principles of organizational behavior, leadership and institutional culture applied to a functional examination of administrative roles in higher education.Educational Statistics (3 hrs)Descriptive and inferential statistical concepts and techniques commonly used in educational research. Organization of data, graphical representation, measures of central tendency and variability, normal distribution curve, sampling theory and tests of significant differences between related and independent samples.Student Demographics (3 hrs)Designed to increase knowledge and learning in the area of college student demographics and current student issues. Provides a comprehensive examination of the demographics and collegiate experiences of today’s postsecondary education student populations in light of current conceptualizations, perspectives and research.
