<p>The M.S. degree provides a deeper understanding of mathematical theory and technique for use in a wide variety of academic and non-academic careers. The M.A. degree prepares you to pursue a Ph.D. degree and for careers in college teaching, business and industry.</p>
<p>In addition to mathematical training, you’ll have opportunities to develop advanced instructional skills. These opportunities include a comprehensive training course for teaching fellows focusing on all types of instructional issues.</p>

</ul></this-program-will-teach-you><program-highlights-label/><program-highlights-1>Research projects and programs are routinely supported by federal and private grants.</program-highlights-1><program-highlights-2>UNT provides a wide variety of services exclusively to graduate students. The Graduate Writing Support Center can help you with writing, and the Office of Research Consulting offers assistance with statistical research.</program-highlights-2><program-highlights-3>The Toulouse Graduate School® offers several professional development workshops, including Thesis and Dissertation Boot Camps. Many of the workshops are available online for your convenience.</program-highlights-3><program-highlights-4>Students also have access to our mathematics library, which contains more than 500 mathematics journal subscriptions, most of which are available electronically.</program-highlights-4><program-highlights-5>The Math Lab offers you a quiet space to complete homework or receive assistance with specific problems. It’s staffed by students with strong math backgrounds.</program-highlights-5><program-highlights-6>Many of our faculty members have published articles in respected journals, worked as consultants for various businesses and companies, and presented research at conferences and seminars. Most of them are involved in research ranging from chaos and dynamical systems to topology.</program-highlights-6><career-outlook-label/><career-outlook><p>The combination of high-quality mathematical training, expansive instructional training and practical teaching opportunities will give you a competitive edge in the marketplace. Our students obtain math-related employment in academic and non-academic settings.</p></career-outlook><courses-label/><course-title-1>Modern Algebra (3 hrs)</course-title-1><course-description-1>Groups and their generalizations; homomorphism and isomorphism theories; direct sums and products; orderings; abelian groups and their invariants.</course-description-1><course-title-2>Topology (3 hrs)</course-title-2><course-description-2>Rigorous development of abstract topological spaces, mappings, metric spaces, continua, product and quotient spaces; introduction to algebraic methods.</course-description-2><course-title-3>Complex Analysis (3 hrs)</course-title-3><course-description-3>Theory of analytic functions from the Cauchy-Riemann and Weierstrass points of view.</course-description-3><course-title-4>Markov Processes (3 hrs)</course-title-4><course-description-4>The ergodic theorem; regular and ergodic Markov chains; absorbing chains and random walks; mean first passage time; applications to electric circuits, entropy, genetics, games, decision theory and probability.</course-description-4><course-title-5>Instructional Issues for the Professional Mathematician (3 hrs)</course-title-5><course-description-5>Focus on various instructional issues from the perspective of the professional mathematician.
