Teach North Texas is UNT's innovative math and science secondary-level teacher preparation program.</p>
<p>TNT lets interested students explore the teaching profession in an initial one-credit hour introductory course followed by a two-credit hour introductory course that can be taken as early as freshman year. Once in the program, students take courses that emphasize field experiences, teaching strategies, and concepts related specifically to the <strong><a href="https://catalog.unt.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=37&amp;poid=18810&amp;returnto=4292">Biochemistry</a></strong>, <strong><a href="https://catalog.unt.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=37&amp;poid=18811&amp;returnto=4292">Physics</a></strong> or <strong><a href="https://catalog.unt.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=37&amp;poid=18785&amp;returnto=4292">Chemistry</a></strong> subjects the students will teach.</p></why-earn-this><this-program-will-teach-you-label/><this-program-will-teach-you/><program-highlights-label/><program-highlights-1>Students can join Talon Teach, an organization that offers future teachers a place to network, discuss ideas, and create lasting relationships with each other and the University.</program-highlights-1><program-highlights-2>After graduation, Teach North Texas offers professional support and development, networking opportunities, and access to top-of-the-line teaching materials.</program-highlights-2><program-highlights-3>Students are paired with experienced high school teachers hired by UNT to teach courses, supervise fieldwork, and offer mentorship and real-world advice to our future teachers</program-highlights-3><program-highlights-4>UNT's College of Education uses Foliotek as a comprehensive online data management system to receive feedback on work from Master Teachers and mentors, create electronic portfolios for presentation to the faculty and prospective employers and track field experience and apprentice teaching/clinical practice.</program-highlights-4><program-highlights-5/><program-highlights-6/><career-outlook-label/><career-outlook><p>Students earning a Physical Science Teacher Certification will be ready to teach physics at the secondary level, where there is a critical shortage of qualified instructors.</p></career-outlook><courses-label/><course-title-1>Knowing and Learning in Mathematics, Science and Computer Science (3 hrs)</course-title-1><course-description-1>Psychological foundations of learning. Problem solving in mathematics, science and computer science education, including utilization of technology. Principles of expertise and novice understanding of subject matter. Foundations of formative and summative assessment.</course-description-1><course-title-2>Classroom Interactions (3 hrs)</course-title-2><course-description-2>Principles of delivering effective instruction in various formats (lecture, lab activity, collaborative settings). Examination of gender, class, race and culture in mathematics, science and computer science education. Course requires approximately 10 hours of fieldwork in schools.</course-description-2><course-title-3>Project-Based Instruction in Math, Science and Computer Science (3 hrs)</course-title-3><course-description-3>Advanced principles of delivering effective instruction in various formats. Overview of policy related to mathematics, science and computer science education. Course requires approximately 20 hours of fieldwork in schools. Must be able to pass a criminal background check.</course-description-3><course-title-4>Apprentice Teaching I in Mathematics, Science and Computer Science (3 hrs)</course-title-4><course-description-4>Teaching under supervision. Required for students seeking secondary certification. See the Teach North Texas program for details. Must be able to pass a criminal background check.</course-description-4><course-title-5>Content Area Reading (3 hrs)</course-title-5><course-description-5>Provides an overview of the reading process with emphasis on reading to learn in the content area. Provides knowledge and skills for identifying reading problems, modifying instructional materials and processes, and using writing to promote learning and thinking in the content areas.</course-description-5><course-title-6>Secondary Teacher Education Preparation I and II (3 hrs)</course-title-6><course-description-6><span>Introduction to mathematics, science and/or computer science teaching as a career. Discussions include standards-based lesson design and various teaching and behavior management strategies.
