Brenda McCoy named vice provost for academic outreach

Aug. 3, 2016

Dear faculty and staff members,

I am very pleased to welcome Dr. Brenda McCoy into her new role in the Division of Academic Affairs. Dr. McCoy undertook her new position as UNT’s new Vice Provost for Academic Outreach earlier this week on Aug. 1.

As Vice Provost, Dr. McCoy is responsible for the expansion and oversight of UNT’s off-campus instructional operations, including UNT’s New College at Frisco, Universities Center at Dallas and Collin Higher Education Center in McKinney. She will develop and oversee a sustainable model for UNT programs in new off-campus and online markets, working with academic units to identify degree programs, credit coursework and non-credit training and enrichment programs most suited to local area workforce needs. She will oversee an academic operation that houses completer and interdisciplinary degrees that meet the needs of post-traditional students, that promotes student success and that increases enrollment. Dr. McCoy also will be responsible for developing and overseeing a process by which UNT can effectively accept and award alternative types of credits and credentials.

As founding chair of the Department of Community and Professional Programs in UNT’s College of Public Affairs and Community Service, Dr. McCoy significantly improved the academic rigor and structure of the college’s Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (BAAS) program, meeting the needs of transfer and post-traditional students, and promoting students’ academic success. She hired faculty members solely dedicated to the BAAS program and initiated the development of online, blended and video-conferenced formats of required BAAS courses. Dr. McCoy more than doubled UNT’s enrollment at the Collin Higher Education Center with modest institutional investment.

Dr. McCoy earned Ph.D. and Master of Science degrees in Sociology from UNT and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Texas Tech University. She held a Rotary Fellow in History at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland.

Prior to joining UNT in 2006, Dr. McCoy served as executive director of the Titan Corporation in Grapevine and as a marketing manager for IBM in Dallas.

No doubt, Dr. McCoy’s new work as Vice Provost for Academic Outreach will increase awareness of UNT and our offerings and help us to develop stronger ties to community colleges and other institutions of higher education, government agencies and the corporate community. On our own campus, she will be collaborating with academic units and the divisions that oversee enrollment, marketing, student affairs and institutional effectiveness.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. McCoy into this new role.
