Email from external sources will be labeled

April 19, 2017

Dear UNT community members,

This message is to notify you that UNT System Information Technology Shared Services will begin including “[EXTERNAL]” in the subject line for all UNT System emails that do not come from UNT, UNT Dallas, UNT HSC and UNT System. This process change has already been successfully implemented with UNT-Dallas, UNT Health Science Center and UNT System. UNT employees should look for this change to take effect 5 p.m. Saturday, April 22. This measure is being taken to help employees recognize messages that are potential phishing attempts.

Please use discretion when opening emails. Do not click on links or open attachments in suspicious emails for any reason. Doing so could load malicious software on your computer and compromise confidential information. To find out more about phishing visit https://itss.untsystem.edu/phishing. Below is an example email header showing how the subject line will appear for external emails:

Subject: [EXTERNAL] Sample Email

The most effective defense against phishing attacks are well-trained and vigilant employees. Security awareness training is required for all employees and can help you recognize malicious emails. If you have not already completed your annual security awareness training, please do so today. The training takes less than 30 minutes to complete, and can be completed in multiple sessions. You may access your security training by logging into the EIS Portal at my.unt.edu by navigating to the "Human Resources" tab at the top of the page, and clicking the "Online Training" link in the box labeled "Information Security Training" with a lock icon in the top left corner. After clicking the link, if prompted, please enter your EUID and password to log into your security training account.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact the UNT System Service desk at 940-565-HELP (4357) and ithelp@untsystem.edu.

Sincerely,

Rama Dhuwaraha,

UNT System ITSS Vice Chancellor and Chief Information Officer
