New drone policy expected for January 2018

Dec. 5, 2017

Dear UNT community,

To comply with federal regulations regarding Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) – known more commonly as drones – the university is developing a policy to regulate their use on campus.

Please note that federal law regulates the use of drones, and UNT’s proximity to the Denton Enterprise Airport means there are additional rules and restrictions that drone operators must follow. UNT has taken those laws into account and developed a policy that also addresses privacy and safety on campus.

This policy is expected to go into effect Jan. 1, 2018. The university will send a link to the policy once it is approved.

In general, the policy states:

  • All UAS use (both indoor and outdoor) must be registered and approved by Risk Management Services (RMS) before operations can begin.
  • No personal recreational use of drones on campus will be allowed.

If you have questions about the proposed policy, contact Risk Management Services at AskRMS@unt.edu.
