New drone policy now in effect

Jan. 9, 2018

Dear UNT community,

To comply with federal regulations regarding Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) – known more commonly as drones – the university has developed a policy to regulate their use on campus.

The new policy went into effect Jan. 1, 2018.  Learn more about the policy, including how to get drone use approval and read frequently asked questions and answers.

Please note that federal law regulates the use of drones, and UNT’s proximity to the Denton Enterprise Airport means there are additional rules and restrictions that drone operators must follow. UNT has taken those laws into account and developed a policy that also addresses privacy and safety on campus.

In general, the policy states:

  • All UAS use (both indoor and outdoor) must be registered and approved by Risk Management Services (RMS) before operations can begin.
  • No personal recreational use of drones on campus will be allowed.

If you have questions about the policy, contact Risk Management Services at AskRMS@unt.edu.
