Planning underway for 125th anniversary

This year is an important milestone for UNT — it’s our 125th anniversary. UNT was founded in 1890 as a teacher’s training school above a hardware store in downtown Denton. Today, UNT is a thriving university with a 900-acre campus and 36,000 students who are bright, creative and inventive. Students who become graduates and change the world in their own special way.

We will celebrate our 125th anniversary with university-wide celebrations, centered on anchor events below. Mark your calendars now! If you’re planning 125th anniversary events, please plan them around these anchor events, if possible. You will be hearing more about these and other 125th anniversary celebrations in the coming months.

  • Founder’s Day, Sept. 16, 2015:This will be the first year UNT celebrates Founder’s Day and it will be the official launch of 125th anniversary festivities. The day’s highlights include the President’s State of the University Address.
  • Homecoming Week, Oct. 5-10, 2015:During Homecoming Week, we will celebrate UNT’s spirit, history, traditions and achievements through a week-long series of activities, including UNT’s Alumni Awards event, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary.
  • Dedication and Grand Opening of the University Union, Spring 2016:We will celebrate the grand opening of the University Union and its role as the heart of student and campus life.

I have appointed a 125th anniversary committee, headed by Eileen Moran, interim vice president for Advancement, and Elizabeth With, vice president for Student Affairs, to plan key events to celebrate our anniversary. The committee includes members from across campus to ensure that we celebrate our anniversary in wide-ranging ways.

The committee is brainstorming and planning right now. If you have ideas about unique ways to celebrate our 125th anniversary that you want to share or if you have questions about how to plan your events to support the 125th anniversary, email The committee will be available to answer your questions.

The committee has prepared 125th anniversary branded logos and guidelines for use in promotional material. You can learn more and download the logos for use beginning in May 2015 at the UNT Identity Guide. You will need to log in using your EUID and password.

I am excited about this milestone year and look forward to celebrating our history and our future as a campus community. With a foundation of 125 years of excellence to build on and thousands of proud UNT students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends in the Mean Green Nation, we’re growing stronger every day.

UNT Proud,

Neal Smatresk
