UNT adds PGA as partner, continues to develop leaders for the creative economy

Dec. 5, 2018

Dear UNT community,

At UNT, we’re focused on offering each student unparalleled opportunities for career exploration and a ticket to the top of their industry. Many of our students will pursue careers in the rapidly-growing creative economy, working in fields such as music, sports, video games, media, hospitality, art, travel, software development and fashion. Creative industries generate about 15 percent of the U.S. Gross Domestic Product, and at UNT, we’re preparing the creative leaders of tomorrow.

Today, we added another world-class sports organization to our portfolio of sport and entertainment partners by declaring our intent to work with the Professional Golfers’ Association of America on education, research and branding initiatives. Yesterday, the PGA of America announced its intent to relocate its headquarters to Frisco, the home of UNT’s Frisco campus and a hotbed of sport entertainment activity. UNT recently added two programs in Frisco that will benefit from our partnership with the PGA – the B.B.A. in Business Integrated Studies with a Sport Entertainment Management track and the M.B.A. with a focus in Sport, Entertainment and Event Management.

By signing a memorandum of understanding with the PGA of America, UNT hopes to develop unique internship and volunteer opportunities for students, conduct research and collect data on behalf of the PGA and develop educational programs for the PGA’s 29,000 professionals. We anticipate opportunities for all students, especially those studying in marketing, hospitality, media, sport entertainment management, business and digital retailing.

I anticipate our partnership with the PGA of America will provide new academic and hands-on experiences for students interested in working in the sport and entertainment industries. We’ve cultivated meaningful opportunities for students through our partnerships with the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Motor Speedway and I look forward to developing the sport industry leaders of tomorrow with the PGA.

The PGA of America’s move to Frisco is exciting and will provide tremendous opportunities for collaboration. I look forward to seeing how we partner together to help both organizations soar higher.

UNT Proud,

Neal Smatresk
