Have you ever wondered what fascinating activities UNT staff members do on a daily basis? UNT employs more than 3,000 staff members with varying responsibilities who help UNT run smoothly and serve our nearly 38,000-student population. Now there is a fun way for you to share what you do with the rest of the UNT community.
Flat Scrappy is a new program created by the UNT Staff Senate that is based on the grade-school social studies initiative “Flat Stanley.” In the popular children’s book, the character Stanley is flattened by a falling wall hanging, after which his friends and family decide to take or mail him all over the world, snapping photographs of him sampling the culture, meeting people or just taking in the sights at his various destinations.
The Staff Senate initiated the Flat Scrappy idea as a way for staff members to showcase their daily responsibilities through pictures with him, helping fellow staffers understand the various roles their peers play in making sure UNT is the best place for students to learn and for people to work. Photos of Flat Scrappy are shared via the Staff Senate’s social media.
Email Claudia Taylor to get Flat Scrappy, then snap an action selfie with him at work and email it to her. You will be featured on Staff Senate social media sites, and you may win a prize from the Staff Senate for your posted photos. Follow the Staff Senate on Twitter @UNTStaffSenate and like its Facebook page, UNT Staff Senate, to follow his adventures.
When Flat Scrappy isn’t out and about with UNT staffers, he lives at Matthews Hall with his handler, Taylor, a communications specialist with the College of Education and chair of the Staff Senate communications committee.
“Our main goal is to highlight, in a fun and interactive way, UNT’s bright and diverse staff population, and all the different things staff members do on and off campus,” Taylor says. “So far I’ve seen Flat Scrappy helping make keys, attending a finance meeting, hanging out with the volleyball team and more.”
And it’s not just about learning how people work here on campus — Flat Scrappy can also go along to attend conferences and retreats and participate in staffers’ hobbies too. Whatever fun and exciting activities you’re doing, consider taking Flat Scrappy with you next time you go.
