Mean Green basketball fans, graduation guests and other event attendees will notice some changes to the UNT Coliseum over the coming months, as the historic Super Pit is currently undergoing an $8 million dollar renovation project.
The project is designed to provide a better fan and student experience with improvements to the Coliseum’s concourse, restrooms and concession stands. The facility has only undergone minor renovations since it opened in 1973.
“Many of our aesthetic upgrades are meant to put us more in line with other collegiate coliseums,” says Terri Pierce, project manager overseeing the Coliseum Concourse Renovation for the UNT System Office of Facilities Design and Construction. “Student experience is the biggest focus for us, and we want to improve on that as best we can. We found that the Coliseum is much more than an athletic venue – it’s more like a multiuse center for the entire UNT and greater Denton community.”
On the west side of the venue, concession stands have already been renovated with new countertops and tiling, and a brand new bank of men’s and women’s restrooms and two individual restrooms have been added. The restrooms on the north end have also been renovated with new walls, flooring, fixtures and hand dryers.
The south concourse restrooms are currently undergoing similar renovations that are anticipated to be completed in time for fall commencement in December.
Other improvements include an updated look for the entire interior concourse with new signage and wayfinding, four new ADA compliant ramps leading from the concourse into the arena bowl, as well as the construction of a new ticket booth on the west side of the arena and a 5,300 sq. ft. addition on the east side that will house another ticket booth and office space for Coliseum and basketball staff members. All of the improvements are on schedule to be completed in time for spring commencement in May of 2018.
The concourse renovation is the first in a series of Coliseum improvement projects, with the next phase upgrading the arena’s roofing.
While the Coliseum will continue to host men’s and women’s basketball games, fall commencements and other events throughout the renovation, operational entrances and new drop-off areas will be clearly identified and guests are encouraged to be mindful of signage and alternate routes to avoid construction zones as the project progresses.
