UNT will be taking part in recognizing International Overdose Awareness Day for the first time on Friday, Aug. 31. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Union South Lawn by the Scrappy Bench.
International Overdose Awareness Day is a global event that is held annually designed to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of a drug-related death. It also gives those who have been effected by the issue a chance to commemorate their loved ones.
The event is open to all members of the UNT community and the public. It will also include free food, departmental tabling and resources, giveaways, handouts, testimonials from students who have survived addiction and an “In Memory” board featuring names and photos of those who have died of drug overdose. There will also be a place for participants to write their own messages.
A similar event will be hosted that evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the South lawn of the Denton County Courthouse on the Square in Downtown Denton.
