</ul></this-program-will-teach-you><program-highlights-label/><program-highlights-1>BMB research and graduate training occurs in modern laboratories in the Life Sciences Complex, the Science Research Building, and the Environmental Education, Science and Technology Building, as well as other facilities across campus.</program-highlights-1><program-highlights-2>Qualified students are supported through competitive teaching assistantships from the Dept. of Biological Sciences or research assistantships funded by faculty research grants; stipends and tuition scholarships are available.</program-highlights-2><program-highlights-3>Applicants for a BMB PhD have the option to be admitted directly into a faculty member’s laboratory or may conduct research rotations through multiple laboratories to find their best fit.</program-highlights-3><program-highlights-4>Faculty members include renowned scientists who have earned recognition from the National Science Foundation, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Society for Microbiology, among others.</program-highlights-4><program-highlights-5><a href="https://bdi.unt.edu/index.html">The BioDiscovery Institute</a> (BDI) gathers a collaborative and multidisciplinary network of scientists targeting development of sustainable biotechnologies that support an environmentally friendly, bio-based economy.</program-highlights-5><program-highlights-6>Faculty members receive prestigious external research support from federal (NIH, NSF, DOE, USDA, etc.), state, private, and foundation sources.</program-highlights-6><career-outlook-label/><career-outlook>Advanced degrees in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology help prepare students for careers across the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) spectrum.</career-outlook><courses-label/><course-title-1>Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the Gene (3 hrs)</course-title-1><course-description-1>Mechanisms and regulation of genetic expression, chromosome replication, mutagenesis and DNA repair, and gene cloning in prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems.</course-description-1><course-title-2>Eukaryotic Genetics (3 hrs)</course-title-2><course-description-2>Research and theory in eukaryotic genetics with an emphasis in metazoan genetic model systems and human genetics, including chromosome structure, genomic analysis, developmental genetics and diseases.</course-description-2><course-title-3>Advanced Cell Biology (3 hrs)</course-title-3><course-description-3>Structure and function of animal and plant cells with emphasis on cell membranes, cytoplasmic organelles and the nucleus; readings in current literature.</course-description-3><course-title-4>Medical Genetics and Genetic Counseling (3 hrs)</course-title-4><course-description-4>Human genetics, including cytogenetics, immunogenetics, population genetics, molecular genetics, human biochemical genetics and genetic counseling.</course-description-4><course-title-5>Bioinformatics (3 hrs)</course-title-5><course-description-5>Introduction to the interdisciplinary field of Bioinformatics. Databases and genome browser tools. Methods and algorithms for biological sequence analysis.
