It is widely recognized as a foundational liberal arts degree, preparing you not only for graduate study in literature or creative writing, but for a range of careers - including teaching, the law, publishing and business - in which the skills of analytical thinking and effective communication are at a premium.</p>
<p>The curriculum develops your writing, critical thinking and analytical skills while introducing you to American, British and world literatures, creative writing, literary theory, composition, language arts and rhetoric.</p>
<p>The Bachelor of English Language Arts is ideal for students who wish to pursue careers as English/Language Arts teachers in secondary school. Course work includes field experiences and is designed to provide knowledge in literature, composition, computer skills, reading techniques, and teaching strategies.</p></why-earn-this><this-program-will-teach-you-label/><this-program-will-teach-you><ul>

<p>Many alumni teach English composition, British or American literature, or English as a Second Language in public and private schools. Some pursue master's and doctoral degrees in a variety of fields in competitive graduate programs nationwide.</p>

</ul></career-outlook><courses-label/><course-title-1>Advanced Grammar and Usage (3 hrs)</course-title-1><course-description-1>Covers basic and advanced concepts of grammar; usage and punctuation; and techniques and practices for effective writing and publishing in the humanities.</course-description-1><course-title-2>Shakespeare (3 hrs)</course-title-2><course-description-2>Representative comedies, histories and tragedies; survey of Shakespeare’s life; his relation to his predecessors and contemporaries.</course-description-2><course-title-3>Ethnic American Literatures (3 hrs)</course-title-3><course-description-3>Study of the literatures of several ethnic communities, including, but not limited to, African-American, Chicano (Mexican-American), Latino, Native American and Jewish-American. Comparison of divergent worldviews and ideologies articulated in ethnic literatures.</course-description-3><course-title-4>American Literature to 1870 (3 hrs)</course-title-4><course-description-4>A broad survey of early American literature from the colonial period through the Civil War; includes the study of a variety of literary genres, movements and traditions.</course-description-4><course-title-5>American Literature 1870 to the Present (3 hrs)</course-title-5><course-description-5>A broad survey of American literature from the late-19th century to the present; includes the study of a variety of literary genres, movements and traditions.</course-description-5><course-title-6>Academic Writing in the Humanities (3 hrs)</course-title-6><course-description-6>Intermediate-level study in essayistic and academic literacies.
