The Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers coursework leading to a minor in German. This minor can help you meet your foreign language requirement for many undergraduate degrees, as well as teach in-demand skills for the global marketplace. 

Our faculty members include native speakers, leaders in national and international organizations and award-winning professors. Students who complete their minor will have advanced-level reading, writing, and communication skills in German. 

The German Minor is designed to prepare students to communicate in the language and explore Germany’s role in today’s world. Students will be looking at Germany’s past and present contributions to literature, art, music, history, philosophy, politics, and economy. 

Students majoring in areas such as art, business, communication, education, film, digital media, history, modern and classical languages, politics, and international relations, will find the German Minor an ideal companion to their specific field of study. 

We work closely with the Study Abroad office to provide multiple opportunities for international work and study. These opportunities allow you to immerse yourself in the language and experience the culture first hand.We offer a variety of opportunities to practice German and learn more about the cultures, including conversation groups and film series.Our World Language Learning Center provides 80 computer workstations, more than 30 software programs for self-study and assignments, multi-language audio and video media and presentation equipment.The Career Center, Learning Center and professional academic advisors are among the many valuable resources that are available to you at UNT. The Career Center can provide advice about internships, future employment opportunities and getting hands-on experience in your major.Studying a world language allows you to acquaint yourself with another culture and develop a global perspective. It also can strengthen your analytic and interpretive skills, leading to high scores in math and English courses and on entrance exams.Advanced German Grammar (3 hrs)Selected readings and video sequences on the history of Germany with emphasis on communication skills.Topics in German Cinema (3 hrs)Topics include study of a period, movement, theme, genre or director.Contemporary Germany (3 hrs)Selected readings and films on history and culture of Germany since 1945.German Literary Survey 1750-1918 (3 hrs)Survey of the literary canon from the German-speaking countries between 1750-1918 in the context of German history and culture.Professional German (3 hrs)Expands and deepens students’ cultural competency and communication skills by focusing on topics related to German business practices, the role of Germany in the European Union, science and technology, and the various professions associated with these subjects.
