The legal studies minor requires 18 credit hours, including 6 advanced hours.<br/><br/>You'll take courses in the following six areas:

<li>Oral and written advocacy</li>
<li>Applied legal studies</li>
<li>Practical legal applications</li>
</ul></why-earn-this><this-program-will-teach-you-label/><this-program-will-teach-you/><program-highlights-label/><program-highlights-1>Available to all majors.</program-highlights-1><program-highlights-2>Flexible enough for students from any major or college on campus.</program-highlights-2><program-highlights-3>Allows students to complete internship or practicum gives students hands-on, real-world experience.</program-highlights-3><program-highlights-4>Interdisciplinary certificate designed to provide the skills and experiences pre-law students need.</program-highlights-4><program-highlights-5>Provides substantial overlap with majors in political science, philosophy, communication studies, business, and criminal justice.</program-highlights-5><program-highlights-6>Allows students to flourish in their education.</program-highlights-6><career-outlook-label/><career-outlook/><courses-label/><course-title-1>Argumentation and Debate (3 hrs)</course-title-1><course-description-1>Theory, research and practice in developing and presenting arguments on public policy issues; reasoning, strategy and oral advocacy.</course-description-1><course-title-2>Writing, Advocacy, and Communication (3 hrs)</course-title-2><course-description-2>Students hone communication skills by creating written and oral projects related to careers in government affairs. Examples of topics include writing grants, white papers, model legislation, and legal briefs.</course-description-2><course-title-3>The Constitution and the Rights of Criminal Defendants (3 hrs)</course-title-3><course-description-3>An in-depth examination of the constitutional rights and liberties enjoyed by defendants in the criminal justice process. Explores the U.S. Supreme Court’s interpretation of constitutional guarantees as that interpretation has developed through the evolution of case law in a political and historical context.</course-description-3><course-title-4>Jurisprudence (3 hrs)</course-title-4><course-description-4>Law in the modern state, meaning and objects, sources and growth, and conceptions of rights and justice.</course-description-4><course-title-5>The American Legal System (3 hrs)</course-title-5><course-description-5>Institutions and processes; courts and judicial behavior.</course-description-5><course-title-6>Practical Legal Applications (1-3 hrs)</course-title-6><course-description-6>Practicum or legal internship <span class="">at a law firm, government agency or law-related non-profit. Bridges coursework with the practical experience.
