TNT lets interested students explore the teaching profession in an initial one-credit hour introductory course followed by a two-credit hour introductory course that can be taken as early as freshman year. The program emphasizes early and ongoing field-based experiences and does fulfill all requirements for certification in Texas. Since 2008, the Teach North Texas enrollment has increased dramatically--from 52 to almost 300 enrolled students.</p>
<p>The Teach North Texas program is a 22-hour minor that fits directly into your degree plan. Upon graduation, you meet the requirements to test for teacher certification in your designated field.</p>
<p>Our students work with experienced elementary, middle school, and high school teachers to act as mentors during their field-based experiences. Mentor teachers open their classrooms to a pair of TNT students, offering guidance and support as they begin to learn about and apply best practice classroom teaching strategies.</p></why-earn-this><this-program-will-teach-you-label/><this-program-will-teach-you/><program-highlights-label/><program-highlights-1>Students can join Talon Teach, an organization that offers future teachers a place to network, discuss ideas, and create lasting relationships with each other and the University.</program-highlights-1><program-highlights-2>After graduation, the program offers professional support and development, networking opportunities, and access to top-of-the-line teaching materials.</program-highlights-2><program-highlights-3>The Department of Biological Sciences offers Degree in Three plans to help students with 30 or more credit hours (either through dual credit/AP or as transfer students) a pathway to earn their degree in three years.</program-highlights-3><program-highlights-4/><program-highlights-5/><program-highlights-6/><career-outlook-label/><career-outlook><p>Graduates of this program are prepared to take their accreditation exam and become certified teachers in Texas.</p></career-outlook><courses-label/><course-title-1>Secondary Teacher Preparation I: Inquiry Approaches to Teaching (1 hr)</course-title-1><course-description-1><span>Introduction to mathematics, computer sciences and science teaching as a career. Discussions include standards-based lesson design and various teaching and behavior management strategies. Fieldwork consists of teaching three inquiry-based lessons to students in grades 3–5 in local elementary schools.</span></course-description-1><course-title-2>Secondary Teacher Education Preparation IIInquiry-Based Lesson Design (2 hrs)</course-title-2><course-description-2>Topics may include routes to teacher certification in mathematics, computer sciences and science teaching; various teaching methods designed to meet instructional goals; learner outcomes. Students modify and teach three inquiry-based lessons in the field in a middle school and participate in peer coaching.</course-description-2><course-title-3>Knowing and Learning in Mathematics, Science and Computer Science (3 hrs)</course-title-3><course-description-3>Psychological foundations of learning. Problem solving in mathematics, science and computer science education, including utilization of technology. Principles of expertise and novice understanding of subject matter. Implications of high-stakes testing. Foundations of formative and summative assessment.</course-description-3><course-title-4>Classroom Interactions (3 hrs)</course-title-4><course-description-4>Principles of delivering effective instruction in various formats (lecture, lab activity, collaborative settings). Examination of gender, class, race and culture in mathematics, science and computer science education. This course requires approximately 10 hours of fieldwork in schools. Must be able to pass a criminal background check.</course-description-4><course-title-5>Project-Based Instruction in Math, Science and Computer Science (3 hrs)</course-title-5><course-description-5>Principles of delivering effective instruction in various formats (lecture, lab activity and collaborative settings). Overview of policy related to mathematics, science and computer science education. This course requires approximately 20 hours of fieldwork in schools. Must be able to pass a criminal background check.</course-description-5><course-title-6>Apprentice Teaching in a secondary school (7 hrs)</course-title-6><course-description-6>Teaching under supervision. Discussions include apprentice teaching experience. Contemporary critical issues in education. Preparation for the state certification exam.
