Our Secondary Certification Program is appropriately rigorous in preparing you for the reality of teaching.</p></why-earn-this><this-program-will-teach-you-label/><this-program-will-teach-you/><program-highlights-label/><program-highlights-1>UNT's College of Education is regionally and nationally recognized for excellence in preparing teachers, administrators, counselors, kinesiology and health promotion specialists, play therapists and other educators.</program-highlights-1><program-highlights-2>UNT is one of Texas’ top producers of students taking the state teaching certification exam.</program-highlights-2><program-highlights-3>Education degrees are ranked 30th for salaries by PayScale.com.</program-highlights-3><program-highlights-4>Our Professional Development School model places students in 200 schools within 30 school districts in North Texas for a full year of mentorship from a certified teacher.</program-highlights-4><program-highlights-5>The Department of Teacher Education and Administration graduates 900 certified elementary, middle school and secondary teachers each and the program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation.</program-highlights-5><program-highlights-6>The University of North Texas has been an innovator in preparing educators since being established in 1890 as a teacher’s college.</program-highlights-6><career-outlook-label/><career-outlook/><courses-label/><course-title-1>Maintaining Classroom Discipline (3 hrs)</course-title-1><course-description-1>Models and procedures for classroom management and discipline, as well as techniques for motivating and instructing diverse student populations. Human relations strategies are discussed in great detail and methods for increasing parental involvement are also addressed.</course-description-1><course-title-2>Instructional Methodologies in Mathematics and Science (3 hrs)</course-title-2><course-description-2>Survey of subject-specific instructional methods and activities in mathematics and science, along with connections to fine arts. Includes subject-specific assessments, subject-specific technology applications and the application of content area reading methods.</course-description-2><course-title-3>Literacy for All (3 hrs)</course-title-3><course-description-3>Provides a brief overview of relevant theory with emphasis on practical applications. Designed to help prospective and practicing middle and secondary school teachers in all content areas increase and enhance students’ learning, especially from printed materials.</course-description-3><course-title-4>Internship I (3 hrs)</course-title-4><course-description-4>Supervised teaching experience in the public schools as teacher of record. Required for initial teacher certification for those already holding a baccalaureate degree. Interns are guided by a school district mentor who assists them with classroom management strategies, student problems and concerns, and general guidance.</course-description-4><course-title-5>Everyone Can Learn: Applying Theory to Teaching Practice (3 hrs)</course-title-5><course-description-5>Processes of learning and development related to teaching in diverse EC-12 school settings.
