Sharpen your competitive edge with our Conflict Resolution Minor. You’ll learn the skills used to resolve conflicts in marriage, business, education, the community and in government. Open to all UNT students.

Through a special practicum, you can observe practicing professional mediators resolving real disputes.You may also gain experience working with local mediation service providers or other conflict management agencies.Our faculty members are recognized experts and practicing professionals with experience in a variety of fields, including arbitration, emergency management, employment and labor relations, finance, government, law, nonprofit management, public policy and urban studies.Training in conflict resolution from the University of North Texas gives you a competitive edge in any profession you choose, including careers in business, education, government, human resources, law enforcement and real estate.In addition to fulfilling necessary academic requirements for the Conflict Resolution minor, you also can earn one or more of the following certificates: Conflict Resolution Certificate; Family Mediation Certificate; Mediation Certificate.You will learn conflict resolution skills by participating in various exercises and real-world simulations.Mediation (3 hrs)Defines and examines the process of mediation. Covers the history and development of mediation and introduces theories of conflict management. Reviews diverse settings of mediation, such as domestic, commercial, non-profit, employment and institutional environments. Significant legal, ethical, professional, cultural and gender considerations are explored. Students participate in mediation exercises and simulations.Negotiation (3 hrs)Introduces the fundamentals of non-litigation strategies for a variety of business, professional and personal settings. Learning and skills are developed through lecture, role playing, out-of-class assignments, case studies and negotiation simulations.Mediation Practicum (3 hrs)Provides opportunity for students to round out their education in dispute resolution through participation in numerous exercises, simulations and actual mediations and/or other forms of alternative dispute resolution.Crisis Intervention (3 hrs)Provides overview of crisis intervention from the perspectives of a host of intervention organizations and professionals. Reviews the tactics, techniques, behaviors, emotions and motivations of those who intervene or negotiate in crisis situations as well as those of persons who precipitate such actions and their victims.Arbitration (3 hrs)Essential characteristics, concepts and practices of arbitration. Examines basic functions and duties of arbitrators, parties in arbitration hearings and party representatives. Covers arbitration ethics and practices in international, commercial, labor/employment, financial services, real estate, and other industries, sectors, and socioeconomic settings.Communication and Conflict Management (3 hrs)Examination of the role of communication in the effective management of conflict and introduction to basic mediation topics such as gender, intercultural and nonverbal communication.
