UNT welcomed Laura Smith as the new dean of students — just in time for the Fall 2023 semester.
With more than 25 years experience in higher education and 22 of those focused on stuent affairs, Smith oversees programs within UNT’s Dean of Students office related to academic support, student conduct, wellness and safety. Also, she oversees the Diamond Eagle Student Resource Center and Student Legal Services.
“Dr. Smith brings an incredible wealth of experience with her to serve our UNT community,” said Elizabeth With, senior vice president for student affairs at UNT.
Smith began her career at Southern Methodist University as an admissions counselor before moving to El Centro College as an academic advisor.
Most recently, she served as associate dean of students and interim director of the Student Counseling Center at the University of Texas at Dallas. She oversaw students’ health and wellness initiatives, as well as crisis management, intervention and assessment.
Smith is an alumna of UNT’s graduate programs, having earned a doctorate in higher education and a master's in counseling. She earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from SMU.
Smith and other dedicated staff are ready to support students looking for assistance with survivor advocacy, legal services and other resources needed to successfully navigate college life.
“I’m excited about my new role. It's very meaningful to be a part of UNT,” Smith said. “I want students to know that if they are looking for help and don’t know where to go, they can come here to the Dean of Students office.”
