Today, as I think about the deeply disturbing video released yesterday of the senseless death of Tyre Nichols, I am saddened about how far we have yet to go as a society to ensure people of color can feel safe. Yet, as I think about the students, faculty, and staff on our campus who are committed to a better future, I feel hopeful we will get there together. As a UNT community, we send our deepest condolences to the Nichols family.

I have asked that the UNT flag be flown at half-staff next week to recognize this loss.

It is likely that many in our community are hurting. Please remember that we have counseling services available for students, faculty, and staff. Students can reach out to UNT’s Counseling and Testing Services at 940-565-2741 or counselingandtesting@unt.edu. Faculty and staff can access UNT System’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which offers free counseling to active and retired employees, as well as members of their household. The EAP can be accessed 24-hours-a day, seven-days-a week by calling 855-784-1806 or TTY: 800-697-0353. To access benefits online, visit guidanceresources.com and when prompted for your Web ID, enter UNTS. Learn more about our EAP.

Please take care of yourselves and each other.
