Each year on the third Thursday in November, people across the nation participate in the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout. It's a day when many smokers make a plan to quit smoking as a step toward living a healthier life and reducing their risk of cancer.
This year, the Great American Smokeout is on Nov. 16, and I'd like to remind you that UNT is a smoke-free campus. The Smoke-Free Campus Policy applies to all campus property, and its effectiveness relies on the consideration and cooperation of tobacco and non-tobacco users. All UNT community members share responsibility for policy compliance and enforcement. The Smoke-Free Campus Policy addresses smoking, as well as smokeless tobacco products and any equipment used for smoking. Please review the policy.
Recent Smoke-Free Campus Policy activity and updates include:
- Orientation and Transition Programs created a video and covered the topic in 2017 orientation sessions.
- New employee orientation now includes information regarding the Smoke-Free Campus Policy.
- UNT is creating a dedicated group, the Smoke Patrol Team, which will walk the campus to share information about the policy and inform violators.
If you're ready to quit smoking and choose to take the first step during the Great American Smokeout, UNT offers a smoking cessation program through the UNT Counseling and Testing Center or you can refer to the American Heart Association.
If you're interested in becoming a member of the Smoke Patrol Team, contact Teresa McKinney.
The health of our UNT family is highly important and the Smoke-Free Campus Policy ensures the health and well-being of all who study, live and work here, as well as those who visit our campus. Thank you for doing your part.
UNT Proud,
Neal Smatresk
