Dear UNT Students,
Welcome to the start of the Spring 2024 semester! This is an exciting time, with new
and returning Eagles reconnecting, forming new friendships and exploring new opportunities
for success. On behalf of the Dean of Students office, please accept our wishes for
a great semester.
The University of North Texas is deeply committed to advancing educational excellence
and preparing students to become thoughtful, engaged citizens of a diverse, global
community. The university has established the Code of Student Conduct to promote the
wellbeing, honor and dignity of all who live, learn and work in our educational community.
The Code of Student Conduct is intended to foster a safe environment conducive to
learning and development, as well as to hold students accountable through an educational
process that balances the interests of individual students with the interests of the
university. Students and student groups are expected to conduct themselves in a manner
that demonstrates respect for the rights and property of others and upholds the integrity
and values of the university community. The Code of Student Conduct has been developed with our students' growth and ability to benefit from UNT educational
opportunities in mind.
A few of the updates include:
- An increase in educational sanctions to connect students to campus resources for outreach,
support and the ability to reflect and think critically about their choices.
- Amnesty may be granted to a student who reports suspected misconduct by another individual, and the report
is made solely to protect another's health, safety or welfare. This is an opportunity
for our students to be stewards of UNT’s shared values and show care for their fellow
Eagles without being held responsible under the Code of Student Conduct. Read the
code for the full list of qualifiers for the Amnesty exemption.
- Explanation of transcript notation when a student is suspended or expelled is in compliance
with Texas legislation.
Enrollment at UNT is considered implicit acceptance of standards of conduct contained
in the code and all other policies applicable to students, all of which are educational
in nature and designed to support students' growth and development as members of the
UNT community. The code applies to all students and to conduct that occurs on campus,
at university activities and off campus when the conduct could adversely affect the
university community, the pursuit of the university’s educational mission or could
create a hostile environment for a student on campus. The Dean of Students will decide
whether the code will apply to student off-campus conduct on a case-by-case basis.
Remember that as UNT students, you carry the name of the university with you and you
represent our community to others.
Anyone can report alleged violations of the Code of Student Conduct to the Dean of Students office. It's important that
complaints regarding alleged misconduct are reported as soon as possible after the
misconduct occurs. The Dean of Students office is located in the University Union,
Room 409, or you can call the office at 940-565-2648 with questions or concerns.
Again, please accept our best wishes from the Dean of Students office for a great
semester. If we can be of assistance to you, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,
Laura Smith, Ph.D.
