Dear UNT Students,

After 10 incredibly rewarding years of service, I write to inform you of my decision to resign as president of the University of North Texas, effective Aug. 1, 2024. I have not made this decision lightly, but it is time for me to embark on a new chapter in my life. I want you all to know that seeing you on campus and hearing about your successes has been one of my greatest joys. It has been a privilege to serve you and see how your education has helped you soar.

Reflecting on the past decade, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the remarkable journey we have undertaken together and appreciate how your engagement at UNT has helped us become nationally recognized, the fastest growing university in Texas, and a place where your dreams take flight.

What truly sets UNT apart is our caring nature and the support that we extend to each other. Our commitment to nurturing the potential of every student is at the heart of this institution. Together, we have created an environment where you not only receive a world-class education but also experience the warmth, encouragement, and mentorship that defines our community.

I look forward to staying connected with you, seeing you at games and around campus, and sharing your aspirations. I will remain an ardent supporter and your advocate for years to come.

Go Mean Green!

Neal Smatresk
UNT President
