Dear UNT Community,
Given the national conversation surrounding sexual assault and misconduct, it is important to reaffirm who we are as a community. We take great pride in living our core values, and our campus culture is rooted in mutual respect, accountability, and a shared commitment to the well-being of those around us. Sexual assault and sexual misconduct have no place within our UNT community.
A safe campus environment requires each of us to be engaged, attentive, and willing to act when someone needs help. I am asking every student, faculty member, and staff member to make two important commitments today:
Look after one another: Watch out for your peers, friends, and classmates. If you are attending a social gathering, walking across campus at night, or noticing someone in a vulnerable situation, please intervene safely or seek help. True community means looking out for the person next to you. The university’s bystander intervention program, Protect Our Nest, works to create a culture where everyone feels empowered to step in, speak up, and support one another. It is important to stay aware and alert for yourself and for the people around you.
If you see something, say something: Do not stay silent if you witness behavior that compromises someone's safety or dignity. Choosing not to report this behavior only protects perpetrators. If you see something concerning, report it immediately to campus authorities. For emergencies, always call 911. For non-emergencies, call 940-565-3000. If you wish to report an incident anonymously, you can do so at report.unt.edu.
Our university is committed to thoroughly investigating reports of misconduct and holding wrongdoers accountable. Safeguarding our community requires all of us to remain aware, support one another, and take action when needed. I encourage you to familiarize yourself with our campus resources.
The well-being of our community depends on each of us looking out for one another. Together, we can keep our campus safe for everyone.
Respectfully,
Harrison Keller, Ph.D.
President
