Dear UNT community members,
In light of the national conversation regarding racism in our country and to honor a uniquely Texas celebration, I have decided to commemorate Juneteenth on Friday by closing our university.
The emancipation of the last Confederate slaves on June 19, 1865, is an historic event that we all should honor, but I know it holds even deeper meaning for the Black community in our state. It is fitting that we mark the day by declaring it a UNT holiday this year because Black Lives Matter.
Note to Students: UNT classes scheduled to meet online Friday also will be cancelled. As is usual during closures, the UNT Willis Library will remain open for use by students and researchers.
Note to Faculty and Staff: Only those employees who have been identified by their supervisors as essential personnel are requested to report to work or continue to work Friday. Please follow the HR guidelines for time reporting to claim this day off. Details will be included in the Wednesday edition of UNT Today.
