The University of North Texas was named a Purple Heat University by the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter #1315 for its ongoing support of veterans and their families, specifically those who were wounded in combat.

“Veterans are an integral part of UNT as students, faculty and staff, and it is with great pride that I accept UNT's designation as a Purple Heart University,” President Neal Smatresk said. “The men and women who have served their country bring insight and experiences that greatly benefit their on-campus peers and our community.”

UNT supports and serves about 3,000 student veterans through the office of Student Veteran Services by facilitating a seamless transition from military life to college civilian life. Office services include enrollment support, assistance navigating VA benefits and sponsorship of veteran student organizations.

UNT has been named a Top 10 Military Friendly Tier One Research Institution by the Guide to Military Friendly Schools, a Top Military Friendly Online College by the SR Education Group, a Top 50 Best College by the Military Times and a Top School by the Military Advanced Education and Transition.

Citing UNT's “reputation for excellence in serving veterans and their families,” the City of Frisco Mayor, Jeff Cheney, declared May 8 “UNT Day.” UNT is a partner with the City of Frisco and recently announced plans to expand its presence in Frisco to serve least 5,000 students.
