Welcome to UNT 101, a weekly series to prepare you to hit the ground running for your new life at UNT. We’ve interviewed Eagle Ambassadors (read: UNT aficionados) about everything from the best places to study to the best music venues in town. Let their answers be your guide to joining the Mean Green family.
No matter where you are in Denton, odds are you’re never too far from some live music. Whether you’re listening to a concert, an intimate show or a street performance, there are plenty of places in “lil’ D” to take in some tunes:
Quaker Town Park
This city park transforms into a sprawling music venue when the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival takes over every April. Attendees of the free fest can take in performances on six outdoor stages, one indoor stage and throughout the park by roving musicians, but students definitely will want to check out the UNT stage to hear their fellow students perform.
Another multi-day music and art festival, Oaktopia takes over downtown Denton every September and was named Best Fest by the Dallas Observer Music Awards in 2015 and 2016. Last year’s lineup featured performances by the likes of Andrew WK, Erykah Badu and UNT alumna Norah Jones.
