Undergraduate Additional Applicant Types

Dual Credit

High school students at participating districts/schools can get ahead on their college career by enrolling in dual credit courses at UNT.

Through this initiative, students enroll in college courses, earning credit for both high school and college simultaneously. This opportunity not only saves on higher education costs but also enriches the high school experience with college coursework, accelerating the path to a bachelor’s degree.

Applicants with a GED

Students who have earned a GED and either have not attended college or have earned fewer than 15 semester hours of transferable college work may seek admission to UNT through an Individual Review process.

How to apply

Students should submit the following items to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions:

  • Application for admission via ApplyTexas.
  • Application fee
  • Official SAT or ACT scores, which are encouraged but optional
  • Official transcripts of any completed high school courses
  • Official transcript of GED scores
  • Official transcripts from any colleges or universities attended
  • Other requirements may include, but are not limited to, letters of recommendation, a personal statement/essay, and an interview with admissions staff

Admission Requirements

An applicant's GED certificate of completion must reflect a minimum score of 165 on each of the four exams.

Applicants who have completed 1-14 hours of college course work must meet a minimum college GPA requirement of 2.5 on a 4-point scale. Applicants with scores from 145-164 will be individually reviewed and required to submit additional documents, such as an essay and letters of recommendation.

Individual Review of Application

Individual Review is an automatic process whereby UNT Admissions reviews the application of any student who does not meet minimum admission requirements. If you are eligible for Individual Review, an email will be sent to you with information on required documentation and how to upload the documents to your my.unt.edu portal.

Factors that may help determine academic readiness under the Individual Review provision may include, but are not limited to:

  • school attended
  • courses taken
  • employment experience
  • special abilities
  • individual achievements
  • leadership activities
  • public service
  • extracurricular activities

Early College High Schools

We understand that as an ECHS graduate, you are not the same as most incoming freshmen, so it makes sense that your admission process should be a little different too. We take your college experience into account during our review process.

Incoming students need:

  • A minimum SAT score of 950 or ACT score of 20, depending on your graduation class rank
  • A high school transcript showing your credits and graduation class rank
  • To have completed the Texas Higher Education Assessment (formerly TASP) or the ASSET, COMPASS or ACCUPLACER tests
  • A community college transcript showing your course work credits
Early Admission

On an individual basis, UNT may admit high school students to the freshman class after completion of the junior year of high school. To be considered, students must:

  • be ranked in the top quarter of their class
  • have a strong B average
  • have completed 3 units each of solid English, mathematics, social science and natural science
  • present minimum combined SAT (combined critical reading/verbal + math) score of 1180 or ACT composite of 26
  • submit letters from high school counselor or principal recommending early admission
  • submit a letter from parents or guardians stating they approve of early admission
  • arrange an interview in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions

Under this program, high school seniors may be enrolled concurrently at UNT through coordination with the UNT Director of Admissions and the high school.

Fresh Start for Transfer Students

Students who have college credits that are at least 10 years old may seek admission to UNT without consideration of that academic work. Contact the UNT Office of Undergraduate Admissions before acceptance.

If you're a Texas resident and apply for admission to Texas public colleges or universities as an undergraduate, you may be able to begin a new course of study with a clear academic record.

If you have credits for college courses taken ten or more years prior to the planned enrollment date, those credits and grades can be waived under the "Academic Fresh Start" law if you invoke it at the time of application.

Please remember: this is an all or nothing option. You cannot pick and choose which courses to ignore and which courses to count. If you choose the "Academic Fresh Start" option, you will not receive any credit for any courses you took over ten years ago.

This means that courses taken previously:

  • Cannot be used to fulfill new prerequisite requirements
  • Cannot be counted toward your new degree
  • Will not be counted in any future GPA calculations.

Academic Fresh Start clears only your academic record, not the number of semesters you have been in higher education. The maximum number of semesters for receiving federal Pell Grants is 12, which must include all of the time you have spent.

Returning Students

Re-enrollment Requirements

Students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have previously attended UNT but have not attended at least once during the 12 consecutive months prior to the term/semester of planned enrollment and who have not received a degree during that time period, must complete the following requirements to re-enroll:

  • Complete the readmit undergraduate application for former students found at ApplyTexas
  • Former students who are transferring in additional credits from another college since they left the institution must provide updated transcripts

If previous UNT enrollment was as a transient, dual credit, summer visiting student or special student, the student must contact the Office of Admissions for clearance to re-enroll

If you decide to change the term you will start at UNT to a different semester after you have applied online, you must complete the update form.

Second Bachelor's

Second bachelor’s applicants should submit an application through ApplyTexas. Select the “Undergraduate Transfer” application and respond “yes” to questions asking if you are seeking a second bachelor’s degree. View the priority dates and transcript submission requirements for second bachelor’s degree programs.

If you have questions about whether a second bachelor's is the right path for you, please connect with our graduate admissions counselors to discuss all program options.

Upon admission to a second bachelor’s degree program, we recommend contacting the undergraduate advising office in the college you wish to enroll for information on course transfer and completion requirements.

Visiting Student Orientation

Transient/visiting students are asked to complete an online orientation prior to enrolling in classes at UNT. Online orientation is available through Canvas, UNT's learning management system.

At orientation, you'll be informed about basic university guidelines and academic requirements. As part of your online orientation, you'll also be given instructions for how to register forclasses. Information regarding this online orientation can be found in the UNT Admissions packet for visiting/transient students.

New transient/visiting students for the summer or fall semesters will have access to online orientation on the first Monday in May. For spring transient/visiting students, online orientation will be available the first Monday in December.

Don't forget to tell us if you will need assistance or accommodations during your time at UNT. Let us know by contacting the Office of Disability Access.

Want to continue at UNT?

We'd love to have you.

Summer visiting students are eligible to enroll at UNT each summer after they have applied and been admitted as summer visiting students, but are not eligible to enroll in the fall or spring long semesters without first transferring to UNT by meeting all transfer admission requirements.

Transient students that decide to continue at UNT after their semester will need to reapply as a transfer student and submit transcripts from all previously attended colleges. The student must meet all admission requirements for a new transfer student prior to their second semester of enrollment at UNT. If a student initially applies as a regular transfer student and is denied admission, the student cannot change their application type to transient.
