The Department of Technical Communication emphasizes evidence-based approaches to preparing students with the technical communication skills they need within modern workplaces. The combined B.A./B.S. and M.A. program enables students to earn their undergraduate degree while simultaneously earning graduate-level credit that be applied to the M.A. degree. Both programs highlight the writing, designing, and coding skills needed for technical communication programs. The combined program allows students to earn both degrees in as little as five years and sets students up for management-level positions early in their careers.

Combined Professional and Technical Communication Degrees Highlights

You can pursue the B.A. by completing the college's standard foreign language requirement, or opt for the B.S. by substituting the foreign language courses with courses in computer science, business computing, data analysis or information science.
Our Technical Communication Lab is equipped with the technology and software needed to complete course work, and Lab staff will help you learn the software skills – such as word-processing, desktop publishing, photo manipulating and web designing – required for technical and business documents.

Content Strategy in Technical Communication (3 hrs)
Introduction to the theories and methodologies associated with content strategy for online media in professional communication settings. Covers how technical communicators can use social media in their work and how professional communicators can plan, organize and develop online content.
Usability and User Experience in Technical Communication (3 hrs)
Introduction to the theories and methodologies associated with assessing and measuring the usability and user experience of documents, software, web sites, mobile applications and other technical or professional interfaces. Methods may include card sorting, think aloud protocol, interviews, observations, cognitive walkthroughs, task analysis, heuristic evaluations and eye tracking, among others.
Digital Literacies for Professional Communicators (3 hrs)
Examination of the digital literacies used in professional contexts. Intensive theory and practice of authoring tools, content management, single sourcing and coding.
Digital Content Strategies for Communication Professionals (3 hrs)
Advanced study of content strategy skills important for technical communicators. Students learn about how technical communicators use content strategies to develop web content. Students also use and analyze major web content management systems, including Drupal, Word Press and Joomla.
Measuring Usability and User Experience for Professional and Technical Communication (3 hrs)
Client-based approach to the methods used to analyze the usability and user experience of documents, software, web sites, mobile applications and other interfaces used by professional and technical communicators. Methods may include card sorting, think aloud protocols, interviews, observations, cognitive walkthroughs, task analysis, heuristic evaluations and eye tracking.
The Profession of Technical Communication (3 hrs)
Provides a foundation for understanding technical communication as a profession. Focuses on the competencies required for information product creation; the tools used by technical communication professionals; collaboration techniques for effective team-based projects; and professional development through interaction with industry professionals.
